Build Efficient Aquascapes
Right-Sized Substrate & Hardscape
A sloped substrate (deeper at the back) creates depth, lifts midground plants, and hides stems. Estimate volume precisely to avoid running short or overloading your stand. Dense stones add significant weight; plan accordingly.
Use Proven Layout Anchors
Placing your main stone or driftwood near the golden section (≈ 0.618 × length) creates a natural focal point. Keep the strongest contrast—largest stone, tallest wood, or open sand—close to that point.
Match Light to Plant Difficulty
Low-light plants thrive at 25–35 µmol·m⁻²·s⁻¹; medium at 40–60; high-demand at 70–90+. With CO₂, run shorter photoperiods initially (6–7 h), then increase as algae stays in check.
Circulation for CO₂ & Nutrients
Use lily pipes or directional outputs to sweep across the foreground and around hardscape. Aim for even pearling and minimal detritus accumulation.
Iterate Slowly
Change one thing at a time—light, CO₂, or fertilization—and observe plant response for a week. Keep notes to correlate settings with growth and algae outcomes.
